Skulls, No Face

Some examples from our second assignment, still working with skulls. I've been experimenting with some different kinds of charcoal recently. I don't personally like to draw as loose as the 3/4th back view I did, and in doing so I got preoccupied with the way I was drawing and lost some proportions, but it was fun to do regardless.

  1. Very nice, Evan. The proportions on your back view are spot-on, and I can definitely tell it's a skull. Adding a bit more shading to the bottom planes would help exaggerate the form, and perhaps a bit more to emphasize the width of the top. Also, as mentioned in class, the back 3/4 proportions seem to be reversed, being narrower at the back and getting wider towards the front. Although you don't like the "loose" style of drawing on the 3/4 back view, I think you did a good job of it. It's also a good way to strengthen your skills and become more comfortable with drawing the skull in different ways.

  2. I agree with the above post, although the proportions on the 3/4 back view seem a little off, I love love LOVE the loose drawing style and revision like elements in the drawing. It makes the drawing feel complete and like it is full of life.
